G'day,
I've been asked by a few subscribers to provide a mid-week update on the
Bribie Laughing Gull. As I'm not sure if I'll be out and about on Bribie
over the next few days, this might be an opportune moment to do so. The
Laughing Gull was present again today on the sandy beach adjacent to
Buckley's Hole. It appeared at about 2pm whilst I was there and was still
present when I left at 2.30pm, this being pretty much at low tide. The area
of beach that was favoured today is not visible from the road next to
Buckley's Hole. In order to see the bird it was necessary to walk the sandy
track to the water's edge and head east, examining any groups of terns and
gulls en route. The Laughing Gull was with about 12 Silver Gulls and 40
Crested Terns, some 100 metres east of the point that the track meets the
shoreline. Beware of mis-identifying Lesser Crested Terns - there are
Crested Terns in the area with yellow bills, yellow-orange bills and orange
bills.
If you want to see the Laughing Gull in full breeding plumage you had better
be quick. Visible today were slight signs of moult around the chin and the
forehead. Note that it has already stayed longer than it did in April.
How's this for a definition of a twitcher - someone who travels to see a
non-breeding or immature plumaged bird on the first day after its discovery,
but doesn't bother (need) to return on a later date when it is in stunning
breeding plumage.
Nothing new to report with regard to Scoopy's. As good as ever and a great
place to celebrate or just wait. And, depending on the time of day, you
could get a beer next door at Beaches R&B.
Cheers - Trevor.
