I have just returned from an 8-week birding trip, and so have some up to date
info on some of the less travelled areas in Africa. Having taken my own
Landrover, I cannot help on any organised birding tour info, but for those who
like a do-it-yourself trip, I should be able to help. A full trip report will
be produced - but it is still probably two months away - at least.

For the section from SOUTH AFRICA through BOTSWANA and NAMIBIA, I have nothing
special - I drove it in 2 days.

However, for ANGOLA, DRC (extreme west), CONGO (Brazzaville), GABON and
CAMEROON I have quite a bit of info.

For CHAD and SUDAN I don't have much - but that is still probably more than
most!

for ETHIOPIA, KENYA, TANZANIA, ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE back to SOUTH AFRICA I have
very little - since I have previously visited these counties, so simply drove
straight through them (the Khartoum to Johannesburg section taking 10 days (so
very little birding was achieved).

If interested, the trip took 8 weeks, and I saw around 700 species - of which
550 had been achieved by the time I left Cameroon. I also believe that it is
the first time someone has tried to drive the route (for any reason) since the
early 1960's (i.e. before the civil wars of the region began). Since the roads
before then were not good at all, I doubt that anyone has been able to do it
before then in anything under 6 months. However, I would not recommend the
route I took, as the road from Angola to DRC was not good - it took me and 8
people digging a full 24 hours to cover 1.5 km!

Wait for the trip report with photos for the full story.
