A phone message taken by one of my fellow reptile keepers this afternoon
informed me that David Mitford had seen 60 Fork-tailed Twits (the correct
spelling of the message) just South of Kiama flying North. This is about 90
km S of Sydney. The swifts were flying in front of the thunderous southerly
change. The message was taken at 2:15 pm.
I raced out to the Komodo Dragon exhibit keeping an eye skyward the time was
about 2:45. The zoo was busy in school holiday mode and I was answering
public queries. An English barmy army enthusiast was asking about the Komodo
when I spotted a swift. Fortuitously he had binoculars and here finally I
had good views of my first ever Sydney County Fork-tailed Swifts. County
tick number 357. In total about 10 Fork-tailed Swifts came through all
heading north.
First time I have received a message like this and connected with a definite
flight pattern. Thanks very much to David Mitford for the advance warning. A
classic catch.
Good birding
