Free Guide to Chiltern Bird Trails Guide
Dear Birding Oz,
Of possible interest to many of you- I've just produced a free guide to
birdwatching spots at Chiltern in north-east Victoria.
The guide was produced to encourage eco-tourism in the area, boosting local
support for bird protection in this crucial area of woodland habitat.
The booklet sets out four half day/full day birdwatching trails in the
Chiltern district, best seasonal spots, and exact locations for rare and
threatened species and lists accommodation and dining options in town. A
complete Chiltern Bird list accompanies the guide.
Chiltern is one of the best bushbirding locales in south-east Australia.
Over 220 species have been recorded in the National Park and surrounding
private land. The high diversity comes from the districts location at the
boundary of the woodland/wetter forest bioregions. The district is a
haven
for a number of now threatened woodlands birds such as Regent Honeyeater,
Swift Parrot, Barking Owl and Turquoise Parrot.
By car Chiltern is 3 and a bit hours from Melbourne, on the Hume Highway,
About 7 hours from Sydney, 5 hours from Canberra, coming from the opposite
direction. There are regular trains to the town, which is surrounded by
the National Park and easily accessible by foot or bicycle.
