Dear B-Ausers
Adrian Boyle estimated 3200 Fork-tailed Swifts just north of Katherine on
1st Jan and then the following day 4600 birds just South of Katherine, NT.
These are the first sightings I have for the NT of more than a thousand
birds in a flock.
Such large numbers have been seen in all other states except Tassie, though
most sightings were back in the 50's and 60's when BOCA was encouraging
people to look hard for swifts.
It would be interesting to try and find out where these large flocks go to,
or whether they remain in the NT. Keep your eyes open and let us know if
you see any.
Our inimitable Sean has heard of uncommon swiftlet sightings in N Qld. I
have not heard of these but would be very interested in any sightings any of
you have.
Happy swift(let) watching
Mike
