Hello Everyone,
I have a problem, with which someone might be able to help. Unfortunately
our video recorder declines to record SBS programmes. I informed my Japanese
connection (with rooftop nesting Little Terns) about the programme on
rooftop nesting Common Terns in Riga, Latvia, which was broadcast on Friday,
3/1/03. Is there anyone who recorded the programme, who can at the very
least tell me who made it and when - he wants to make contact with someone,
anyone, to find out more about it - and, a big ask, is there anyone who
would be willing to send the tape to Japan to Mr Hayakawa? Or to me to send
on? He is a researcher, and is collecting all information he can about
rooftop nesting terns anywhere in the world.
I am kicking myself for not ringing someone to get it recorded. So far, all
I have been able to learn is from the SBS website:

In the early 80s, 200 pairs of common terns were forced to abandon their
last natural nesting place on a river island near Riga, the capital of
Latvia. As humans were encroaching on their territory, they were forced to
look for a new habitat. The birds chose the flat-pebbled roof of a concrete
?island¹ a printing house in the middle of the city. The first
generation of birds to reach maturity on this roof and fly to Southern
Africa in the winter has covered the distance from the earth to the moon.
This program also looks at the reaction of the townsfolk to the birds. (From
