Hi and happy new year to
all.
Yesterday (31 Dec) I
visited the Warriewood wetlands on Sydney's northern beaches with my brother
(visiting from the UK). We saw 60 species in about 2 1/2 hours.
Highlights were the Lathams Snipe (still present), a Crested Shrike Tit showing
really well, female Cicadabird, a mixed flock of swifts and a Buff Banded
Rail. We also saw, very briefly, a bird which we think may have been a Little
Bittern. It flopped over from one reed bed to another at the back of the wetland
when viewed from the boardwalk and was only in view for about 5 seconds.
IN that time, we noted a squat looking bird, generally pale brown colour, paler
patches in the wings that looked large for the body, "no neck" and landing like
a long jumper (ie feet out in front). It landed and disappeared. Has
any other Sydney birder seen likely candidates at
Warriewood?
This morning at home
(Turramurra) I have started my 2003 list with, amongst others, Channel
Billed Cuckoos (going strong at 6 am for all those suffering hangovers!), Koel,
White Throated Needletails, a Dollarbird and a Pacific Baza - the
latter two unusual for my house. We were going to have a barbecue (and
look for Powerful Owls!) at Cumberland State Forest when the rain set
in!!
Cheers
Tom
