Another year of birding draws to a close, which for me will be marked by a
number of personal highlights in my chosen hobby. Once again this wonderful
forum has proved its worth and thanks to the efforts of those behind the
scenes (Russell et al).
In 2002 I have derived enormous satisfaction from Sean Dooley's Big Twitch.
Whatever one's views on the merits of twitching (and I pass no judgement
whatsoever), Sean has provided us with an entertaining yarn, and I for one
looked forward to seeing an email appear with his name beside it knowing
another instalment was on its way. Congratulations Sean on attaining this
memorable milestone and for sharing it with us!
While Sean's emails were most welcome, the forum does have a darker side,
which to me is not as welcome. This generally makes its appearance as
sniping between individuals; which seems incongruous, as we are members of a
group that generally has the same aims and ambitions when it comes to birds.
Coupled with the sniping is those people who have a particular barrow to
push (generally anti banding) and yet do not seem to have the courage of
their convictions and so hide behind a veil of anonymity. To those people,
now is your chance to make a resolution to utilise these energies for the
good of wild birds in Oz. Come out in 2003!
To the rest a very happy new year to you all.
Regards
Alastair
