I went back to Thornside, and in the strong afternoon sunshine was able to determine that the 3 birds I had been looking at yesterday were great knots. They were loafing in a flock of godwits, and more closely resembled their mug shots in the field guides than they did feeding in the low light yesterday. Mind you, I still think the GK bills are longer than indicated in the guides. There were at least a dozen golden plover types about, but conditions weren't great for the waders with optimistic fisherman disturbing their roosts. Regards, Laurie.
