        Troms=F8 (N.Norway, 69*50'N) now experiences m=F8rketiden, i.e. the dark
period, the two months that the sun does not rise above the horizon. Until=

a few days ago we had rain and mild weather, which removed the snow that
had fallen before (But made the treacherous ice on the minor streets only
still more slippery), and so made the whole scenery pretty dreary and
murky. But then we got a blizzard, with strong winds (a taxi was hit by a
flying traffic sign near the airport) and now it has been snowing steadily=

for three-four days and this immediately has a favourable effect on the
light-climate, as the snow reflects the sparse daylight very
effectively.the temperature also has dropped, to ca -10*C today, but we
prefer freezing weather to sleet and rain this time a year. And 'all our
Christmases are white', at least during the 30 odd years I have lived here)

        This is not a really good time for birding here in the far north: there
are few birds and those there are you can't see, as it is pitch
dark except for 2-3 hours around noon, when we have some twilight. The
Bohemian Waxwings, that have been common in town all autumn, now seem
largely gone, and there are also hardly any Fieldfares left, although they=

have not eaten absolutely all the rowanberries this time. in the garden
Great and Willow tits come to the feeders, and here in my local forst patch=

(Folkeparken) I still hear a Coal tit now and then---these are inland birds=

of the pine forests, with irregular irruptions to these coastal areas some=

years.

        In the sounds around the island the normal crew of Cormorants, Common
Eiders (with far fewer King Eiders), scoters , Long-tailed Ducks and
Red-breasted Mergansers are around, and along the shore tens of Mallard
winter, having restricted their annual migration to something like 3km the=

last years. Hooded Crows and Ravens patrol the shore, together with Herring=

and Great Black-backed Gulls; I have not seen any 'white gulls' (Glaucous
and Iceland) as yet, but even white gulls are hard to see in the dark, so
they may well be around already; there are some every winter. The
White-tailed Sea Eagle also has returned to our part of the island.

        But what I really wanted to inform you of, is that my email address has
changed slightly, a consequence of an official name change of our museum,
now Troms=F8 Museum, Universitetsmuseum. The new address is

        Rests only to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and
Harmonious 2003!

                                                                        Wim
Vader, Troms=F8 Museum
                                                                        9037
Troms=F8, Norway
