Hello birders,
Alan Stewart, President of the Hunter Bird Observers Club, has reported
on the club's monthly wader count in the Hunter estury as follows:
Ash Island was great this morning, with over 3500 birds present
including 2400 waders. There were about 1200 Sharp-tailed sandpiper,
314 Marsh Sandpiper (this is the most I've ever seen there), 129
Greenshank, 35 Golden Plover, 239 Black-winged Stilt and 380 Red-necked
Avocet. Also, nearly 800 teal, in about equal numbers of both of the
species.
Also, we saw a pair of Brown Songlark and heard at least 2 other birds.
The pair we saw were near the area south of the radar huts where an
experiment in salt marsh rehabilitation is underway.
Watch out for baby Red-capped Plovers on Wagtail Way, about 50m from
Crake Corner.
And there were also many many birds on Stockton Sandspit during the high
tide survey this morning. Even 4 hours later when I got around there,
it was still pretty good out there.
Regards
Alan
