In response to John's request for information on marine invertebrates, my
contact at the Melbourne Museum offers the following thoughts.

It confers with Harvey Perkins thoughts.

Hi Martin

The marine organisms described were goose barnacles.  They are essentially
barnacles like those often seen encrusting rocks which frequently attach to
flotsam via a flexible leathery "foot".  Barnacles are highly specialized
crustaceans.
