A while ago there was some discussion in the group on the use of natural breeding sites by Welcome Swallows. Last weekend (1 Dec) we were at a property called "Brooklyn" out of Urbanville/Woodenbong in northern NSW. At a site called "Skull Cave" (yes there is a cow's skull in the cave!), we found a recent swallow's nest attached to the side wall of the cave. The cave itself was in sandstone, about 4-5m wide, 3-4m deep and 2m high at the outer edge. No bird was seen at the nest, which was empty. I assume the builder was a Welcome Swallow, this was the only species seen that weekend and the nest was cup-shaped without any spout.
