Hi
I'm hoping someone out there can help. I think I need someone with
experience in Lewin Rail calls. I have visited a swamp area (in a Brisbane
suburb) twice recently, early in the morning, and on both occasions have had
a bird calling from very thick cover - thick reed bed - very close, but have
been unable to see it. Despite continued observation the blighter moved
several meters without exposing itself. Not unusual for a crake/rail (try
finding corncrakes!) but frustrating.
The call is (and I'm not very good at this) a repeated single
"WOOOO" - in a surprised tone! (A bit like the second part of the classic
owl call "twit - taWOO"??!!) Very quiet - almost like a contact call of some
sort, repeated irregularly every few seconds. I think Lewin's Rail - it just
seems to fit the bird, but would really like to know if this is a regular
sort of call from your experience. I know crakes & rails have a range of
calls under normal circumstances. I'm planning on trying to spend some time
just sitting waiting for 'it' to appear - just haven't had that time avail
yet.

        Hopefully!
