** I was going to send this privately but...... I'm brave? **
Dean,
Congrats on your rational, well written thoughts on leg flagging. I enjoyed
reading it. While I don't have a set opinion on the issue at this stage, as
I know very little about the process, I have seen a small wader at Werribee
with a flag which, quite honestly, to my unscientific new-at-birding mind,
looked very uncomfortable for the bird going about its foraging.
I can understand people that take part in it being defensive about the
process, as they wouldn't be doing it if they didn't think some benefit was
being obtained but it always pays to be open-minded and question things
through your life. I, myself, have helped with wildlife activities that I
now don't feel very comfortable about having done. I even question some of
the work that I've felt very passionately about in the past.
You also raised an interesting point about the real possibility of it
impacting and skewing the information for which they are initially put
through the whole process for in the first place.
Anyhow, good on you and I hope you don't cop too much abuse. It is an
interesting topic and if a bona fide concern is found to exist it would be
beneficial for all if it were to be addressed and thought through carefully
and objectively.
Cheers
Karen.
