It is a question of statistics. Can anyone tell us what percentage of birds are flagged? (And as an accurate statistic - not a wild guess.) If it a small number, and most flagged birds are not observed again, this means nothing - you are simply flagging birds which will not be seen again anyway - or not by the small percentage of birders who report it. If it is most birds (> 60%), which I doubt, then we probably should stop flagging if they are not seen again. I await accurate statistics.
