Hello all,
The Griffith area (central-west NSW) is currently undergoing a bit of a
honeyeater invasion. Painted Honeyeaters have adopted just about every
patch of Boree (Acacia pendula) or Yarran (Acacia homalophylla) with
mistletoe (Amyema quandang) in the area. No breeding activity as of yet. On
the weekend I saw and heard them at seven locations around Lake Wyangan and
Nericon Swamp, north of Griffith. They are also continuous along the
Mirrool Branch Canal Rd, the Widgelli Rd and the Whitton Stock Route south
and east of Griffith. Other honeyeaters to have moved into the area include
White-fronted Honeyeaters, Black Honeyeaters and Pied Honeyeaters, these
three species occurring where Emubush (Eremophila longifolia) is flowering.
Pied Honeyeaters have turned up at 4 locations so far, Black Honeyeaters at
five.
The other unusual visitor noted on the weekend was a Red-backed Kingfisher
on Boorga Rd, Lake Wyangan.
Cheers
Mick Todd
