Hi,

A quick note or those who may be interested that there is a female Leopard Seal in Port Philip Bay. Apparently it may have been around for a couple of weeks.

A word of caution for anyone who might happen to stumble across it or, if it comes ashore, happens to go and see it. Leaopard Seals like most seals are surprisingly quick and potentially vicious. Unlike the equally bite-likely but diminutive Fur-seal, this animal is likely to be about 4m long and weigh perhaps half a tonne.

It is not unusual for these animals to arrive in Australian waters at this time of the year. Theory has it that they may be driven north when outcompeted for krill which is their main prey during certain times of the year.

Cheers,

Simon.
