Signs of rare desert lizard found outside Alice Springs

A conservation biologist doing a fauna survey on Birds Australia's Newhaven
Reserve, north-west of Alice Springs, has found signs of a rare desert lizard.

Steve McAlpin says there are only two other national parks in Australia that
support populations of the threatened great desert skink.

Mr McAlpin says an active skink burrow was found near a temporary lake that had
been under grazing pressure from cattle and horses.

He says now the area is a private nature reserve, the skink has a good chance
of survival.

"Once grazing animals are removed from the area and the area has a chance to
rehabilitate, the vegetation and the rest of the biota there, then it should be
really good for all the plants and animals to re-establish," he said.
