Robin Murray and I explored the above areas 90 km SW of Sydney city yesterday
(Thirlmere Lakes is S 34°13.391' E
150°32.458').

Our prime purpose was plant and orchid exploration, but this was limited by
very dry countryside, all grasses now brown, and
in some areas the plant cover has gone and there's just dust. Very few
flowers. Many shrubs and trees were showing signs of
stress with leaves limply hanging off the trees, or now fallen to the ground.
A hot day but with some breeze giving respite.
Despite all of this, there was a surprising number of birds, with Bargo having
the Bargo River, and Camden having Belgenny
Reserve on the Nepean River. Birds for the day included:

Olive-backed Oriole calling non-stop for 2 hours (called, stopped for 5
seconds, called again - over and over)
Variegated Fairy-Wren
Brown-headed Honeyeater
Channel-billed Cuckoo
White-throated Warbler giving that lovely "falling leaf" call
Bell Miners
Rufous Whistlers seemingly everywhere and calling lots
Black-shouldered Kites - 3 separate sightings of one bird each time, all
perched on power lines and studiously watching the
ground
Brown Gerygone, seen, heard and found the hanging nest decorated with lichen
and having a spout at the side where the bird
enters and exits
Lewin's Honeyeater
Red-rumped Parrot
White-browed Scrubwren

Cheers and Happy Times with Nature
