Birding visitors to the Lower Hunter area of NSW usually go to the Hunter River estuary islands (Ash Island, Kooragang Island) and to Pambalong Wetlands near Minmi. Both these locations usually have good birding.

Another site worthy of a visit is Walka Water Works at Oakhampton near Maitland. This is a dam originally constructed in the 19th century to be the first water supply for Newcastle. It is now a recreation area.It has deep water suitable for Musk Duck and all three Grebes as well as other water birds. The western part of the dam has good reedbeds.

My list for last Friday included:
Musk Duck
Black Swan
Australian Wood Duck
Pacific Black Duck
Grey Teal
Chestnut Teal
Pink-eared Duck
Hardhead
Australasian Grebe
Hoary-headed Grebe
Great Crested Grebe
Darter
Little Pied Cormorant
Little Black Cormorant
White-faced Heron
Little Egret
Intermediate Egret
