Hi everybody -

I realise that the message below is not about Australian birds, but it may
be of interest to Australian birders who have not yet booked their summer
holidays and don't mind getting their feet muddy in a worthwhile cause. It
was originally posted to the Oriental Birding list. Anyone interested in
taking part in the census please contact Enam directly.

Cheers,
Hugo

Dear birders,

Mr Enam Ul Haque <>, the National Coordinator of the
Asian Waterbird Census Programme is organizing the wintering waterbird
census in Bangladesh. He welcome participants from abroad to participate
the field tours. The cost will be shared by all the participants, which is
about US$ 20 per day per head. Sunderban tour may have some additional
cost. Please feel free to contact Enam if you need further detail on the
tours or would like to participate in the census. The Schedule of the
census are,

2-9 Jan 2003, South-Central Coastal Region
10 Jan 2003, Mudflats of Padma River in Munshiganj District
16-20 Jan 2003, Mudflats of Kachikhali and Katka in the Sunderbans
23-25 Jan 2003, Muhuri Dam Reservoir and Patenga Sea-Shore
30-31 Jan 2003, Mudflats of Jamuna River in Sirajganj District
7 Feb 2003, Ailer Beel in Faridpur District
12-17 Feb 2003, North-Central Lakes (Tangua & Pashua Haor)

In 2002, more than 20 participants have enjoyed the census with Enam,
including a few from overseas. A total of 37 wetland sites were covered,
and the interesting counts were Ferruginous Duck (90,000), Baer's Pochards
(110), Red-Crested Pochards (6,600), Northern Pintail (50,000), Fulvous
Whistling Ducks (14,000) in the Haor Basin region; Shelducks (12,000),
Bar-headed Geese (350) and Indian Skimmer (503) in the east-central
coastal; Greater Thick Knee (7), and Masked Finfoot (1) and Lesser Adjutant
Stork (3) in the Sunderbans.

We wish Enam a successful census again in 2003!

Best regards,

David Li
