Swift Parrot migration

Hi Andrew,
Yes the Swift Parrots generally move back to Tassie over a 2-3 month (Aug-Oct) period in small flocks.  This year at the start of August there were still swifties on the Gold Coast when some where arriving back in Hobart!  So there are certainly still opportunities for people to see them on the mainland for the next few weeks.   In addition to the birds on the central coast there have also been records in the past couple of weeks from Pambula on the far south coast of NSW and from the south western slopes including Mates Gully TSR (near Tarcutta), Charles Sturt Uni (Wagga Wagga), Brungle (north of Tumut) and Adelong (west of Tumut).

Interesting that so many Swifties remain on the Central Coast. I was in Tasmania for a pelagic trip a couple of weeks ago and encountered 20-25 birds at Peter Murrell Nature Reserve. I never realized that the species' migration could be spread out over weeks or even months as seems to be the case here.
