We too had a good day in the valley yesterday.

At least three nesting Banded Lapwings, close by the Ground Cuckoo-shrikes.
Plumheaded Finches in a couple of locations. Dollarbirds, Pallid Cuckoos and
Koels all back. (Black-eared Cuckoo at Abberton a few days ago).

We had two encounters with Black Falcons yesterday. Firstly, before lunch,
not far from Forest Hill, and then an hour or so later north of Lake
Clarendon, where they were harassing a Wedge-tailed Eagle, as Jill
mentioned. Only 7or 8 km and one hour apart, probably the same pair.

The Curlew Sandpiper at Lake Atkinson was hanging around with a group of ten
or so Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. A few Marsh Sandpipers were strung out
around the lake. I didn't see the Pacific Golden Plover, but I've got
records of them at both Clarendon and Atkinson. We saw three tern spp at
Lake Atkinson, Whiskered, Gull-billed and Caspian.

The garden list at Abberton ended up at 107 spp for September, our best
September list to date. Of course, some birds that missed the list turned up
today, 1st October!

It's a great start to spring!

Hi everyone,

The list below proves that I am capable of looking at birds other than
terns, and I can make tick lists. Yesterday I took a day off and went
birding with my husband, James Hall, and friends Ivan and Joyce Fien. The
list below (94 species) takes in birds seen between Kilcoy, which is the
hinterland of the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast and our destination, the
Lockyer Valley. We did so enjoy the day. Personal highlights were the Ground
Cuckoo-Shrike and a Marsh Tern in splendid breeding plumage. The Marsh Tern
is a bird I seldom see, and this was the first time I have ever had the
pleasure of admiring from close quarters its magnificent breeding plumage.

We met up with Jolly Bill Jolly (lovely to see you again, Bill). Bill led us
to the Ground Cuckoo-Shrike, plus a few others, before we went our separate
ways. It was a working day for Bill, who was guiding a couple of US
visitors. I puzzled over a distant plover on mud at Atkinson Dam, and it
looked to me through the atmospheric distortion and the scope like a Pacific
Golden Plover very much in non-breeding plumage. Otherwise it would have had
to be something unusual. I was out of habitat myself, and wasn't sure if
this was a normal sighting. Comment, Bill? After you left we found the
Black-tailed Godwit and the Red-necked Stint, but couldn't find the Curlew
Sandpiper you had mentioned. We had a rippingly spectacular display when a
Wedge-tailed Eagle was the target of two Black Falcons and a Whistling Kite,
repeatedly soaring, then stooping to the earth-bound eagle.

List appears below. I use an old list, so there might be some old
nomenclature.

Cheers,

Jill
