Hi All,
Thought this might be of interest to birders particularly those in the UK.
Tonight whilst watching a BBC production on archaeology called "Meet the
Ancestors" an episode called "Killing Field"(shown on SBS) filmed in an
area of Gloucestershire known as Tormarton, I became aware of the
unique call of European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster). The bird(s) could
clearly be heard calling whilst the host, Julian Richards was being
filmed on a Bronze-Age archaeological site in an area of fields with a
small copse of trees. The episode appeared to have been filmed through
two seasons as the deciduous trees appeared with and without leaves, and
despite this the Bee-eaters could be heard throughout. I am in little
doubt that the call was part of the background sound and not 'dubbed' on
at a later date, as other sounds such as vehicles could be heard too.
Unfortunately I missed the credits and therefore am unaware of the date
of the episode, but would welcome any feedback from birders in the UK or
elsewhere as to whether there was an influx of this species recently in
western europe.
