It would be an absolute disaster if Canada Goose ever became established in
Australia. In Britain they infest every body of water larger than a puddle.
I'm relieved that Western Plains Zoo only keeps 5 Canada Geese. When I was
there in 1999 they certainly had more than that. I wrote to them (the Zoo,
not the Geese) at the time pointing out that with the Macquarie Marshes just
up the road the Canadas were a disaster waiting to happen. They replied that
there was nothing to worry about as a)the birds were pinioned (ie wings cut
off) and b) every clutch of eggs they laid were destroyed. I wrote back
pointing out that this was not only not very reassuring, but monstrously
cruel as well, and why didn't they just not keep them? Perhaps they are
acting on my advice and running their stock down!
