Since there isn't a "Recommended Birding Abbreviations" list, the 
simplest solution is to make sure you define any abbreviations used
the first time they are used e.g.

   A Whiskered Tern (WT) was still present at pond #1 of the Fyshwick
   Sewerage Ponds on September 11; the WT was seen feeding on the same
   pond the previous day.

Others may prefer to use "WhT", "WhTe" or even "T(W)" as the abbreviation
- as long as it's defined, there shouldn't be any confusion.
