Heard my first Koel of the season this morning (Sept 8th) in Lilyfield
(inner West Sydney) - while I was running a 5k race on the shores of
Iron Cove. Thought it might be a good omen but I finished 6th.
I've been going around Iron Cove regularly on training runs.
One interesting sight in the last few months has been urban waders - upto
40 Bar-tailed Godwits feeding near Rodd Point and within 10-20m of
the passing walkers, runners and cyclists. At least I assume they are
Bar-tailed, I don't carry binoculars. The Black-winged Stilts are easier
to identify. Also once in July, a skittish Black-fronted Dotterel maybe
wandering into this less than usual estuarine habitat because of dry
times inland.
The training runs were for next weekend's Sydney marathon - so if you
get stuck in traffic trying to get out birdwatching next Sunday, I'm
one of the people you can blame.
