Hi Desley,
There have been a number of accounts here in Victoria's Box-Ironbark 
forests of members of the parrot family nesting in hollows at the base 
of trees due to the lack of hollows above ground.  This does of course 
render them very vulnerable to predation by dogs, cats and foxes and 
demonstrates the importance of high hollows for roosting and nesting!  
And as it is currently breeding season for many birds, competition for 
hollows would be at its greatest, so chances are that many are trying to 
rear young in any hollow they can find, even at ground level.  It would 
be interesting to see the success rate of fledglings.
