Approaching the middle of Spring, I thought I do a quick check in my local patch for about an hour before lunch at Prospect Reservoir (approx. 40 km west of Sydney CBD).

Only a few species of waterbird present including Great Crested Grebes (100 plus), Australasian Grebes (10 plus), Hardhead (12), Coot (400 plus), Swamp Harrier (1), Whistling Kite (1) and Whiskered Terns (80 plus, probably much more). A scope is always handy in this place, as many water birds are too far away from the accessible eastern shore line.

The wind conditions just before I left produced some "white caps" over the water which reminds me of times of sea watching at Maroubra!

Very dry conditions in the picnic areas so not much bush birds about.

Are there any areas where there has been an increase in waterbirds recently? The good numbers of ducks etc present in Sydney during the winter appeared to have moved.

I still haven't heard a Pallid Cuckoo yet this season in Sydney, where are they?
