EAGLEHAWK NECK BOAT TRIP - 22 September 2002

  GROUP:             Rob and Gail Berry, Sean Dooley, Els Hayward, Chris and
                     Rosemary Lester, Jann and Ross Mulholland, Andrew Stafford,
                     Lorand Szucs (Hungary), Bill Wakefield, Andrew Wells,
                     Martin and John Woodward.
  VESSEL/SKIPPER:    Pauletta / John Males, with Michael Males.
  WEATHER:           Cloudy early, but clearing in the afternoon with sunny
                     conditions.  Moderate NW wind of 15 knots early then
                     freshening to 20 knots from the SW in mid-afternoon.
  SEA:               Slightly choppy sea of less than 1 m with initial swell of
                     1.5 m in the morning.  Choppy sea of 1 m with very slight
                     swell in the afternoon.
  ACTIVITY:          Sailed 07.20.  Headed south-east from Pirates Bay past the
                     Hippolytes to the first stop at 09.30 at 43 o 12.0
'S 148 o
                     12.5'E, approx 1 nm past the shelf in 260 fathoms with
                     water temperature at 11.7 o C.  Continued east and stopped
                     at 3.5 nm past the shelf in 430 fathoms (11.8 oC) at 43o
                     12.2'S 148o 15.5'E at 10.30.  The third stop was at 12.00
                     at 43o 13.4'S 148o 19.4'E in 460 fathoms (12.0 oC).  The
                     fourth major stop (for the Blue Petrel) was further out
                     from the shelf (just over 10 nm past the shelf) at 12.30 at
                     43o 14.0'S 148o 22.9'E in 500 fathoms (12.0 oC).  The last
                     major stop was back approx 3 nm outside the shelf at 14.00
                     at 43o 11.3'S 148o 14.7'E in 430 fathoms (11.6 oC).  This
                     was where we saw the Fulmar.  Travelled in against the chop
                     without stopping and docked at approx 16.10.
  ANIMALS:                Australian Fur-Seals ? at and near the Hippolytes.
  BIRDS:             Good numbers of birds with a good diversity.  The
                     highlights of the day were a Blue Petrel among quite good
                     numbers of prions, many of which came quite close to the
                     boat, and Southern Fulmar, which we found sitting on the
                     water among some feeding prions and GW Petrels.

  Little Penguin     2 (1).
  Common Diving-Petrel    70 (10).
  Northern Giant-Petrel   3 (2).
  SOUTHERN FULMAR    1.
  Cape Petrel        25 (12).
  Great-winged Petrel     10 (4). 2 race gouldi.
  BLUE PETREL        1.
  Antarctic Prion    10 (2).
  Slender-billed Prion    15 (2).
  Fairy Prion        15 (5).
  White-chinned Petrel    1.
  Sooty Shearwater   3 (1).
  Short-tailed Shearwater      50 (30). Inshore in two groups only.
  Royal Albatross    4 (1).  2 Northern RA and 2 Southern RA.
  Black browed Albatross  20 (5).
  Shy Albatross      200 (40).
  Yellow-nosed Albatross  50 (6).
  Buller's Albatross 2 (1)
  Grey-backed Storm-Petrel     3 (1).
  Australasian Gannet     10 (3). Inshore
  Little Pied Cormorant   1. In Pirates Bay.
  Black-faced Cormorant   20 (7). Mostly in Pirates Bay and at the Hippolytes.
  Sooty Oystercatcher     1. Inshore
  Pacific Gull       2 (2). In Pirates Bay
  Kelp Gull          20 (15). In Pirates Bay, except for one 10 nm out from the
                     shelf.
  Silver Gull        10 (5). In Pirates Bay
  Crested Tern       5 (2).
  White-fronted Tern      5 (5). One group together beyond the shelf.

  Remaining 2002 Trip:  24 November.
