The primary reason that traffic goes in both directions is that when you are
downloading, the receiving "message handler", i.e. the one in your computer,
is frequently not receiving fully/correctly (crappy Telstra lines) and sends
a brief message back saying "please send that last bit again, I didn't quite
get it". It also sends messages saying "OK, I'm ready to receive", "Yes, I
got your message saying we're finished" and "hang on a sec., while I adjust
my bits and pieces".  Same when you are sending.  You will notice that the
volume of data is proportionally much higher in the direction that the main
message is actually going - something like 20 to 1.

I am no longer a fully competent computer bod able to give you the full
techno-speak explanation, but the above is the layman's version!
