I tried to do some sea bird watching from Hastings Point (far north coast
NSW) today.
As a beginner to this type of birding, I have some questions to ask those
with a great deal more experience.
How do you watch birds, often far off shore, when the wind is strong enough
to blow over scopes on tripods and is too strong to hold binos steady
without using a rest for the elbows?
How do you follow birds in flight when the wind moves them at a rate that
makes it impossible to focus on them?
I wanted to bird from a chair but the wind was strong enough to blow the
chair off the point.
A very disappointing day from the point of view of seabirds, but any day
which produces over 45 species in under one and a half hours, including 7
species of raptors, despite the gale, is not bad.
