Hi All,
Just an update from the Swift Parrot capital of
Australia (that is for this week). While the Swift Parrots at Bateau Bay have
declined to just 20-30 birds it does appear that most of their mates have
deserted the salubrious coastal Bateau Bay area because the flowering of the
Swamp Mahogany has come to an end and have joined forces with those birds
feeding on the western side of Tuggerah Lakes in the flowering Forest Red
Gum. Debbie Saunders, the Swift Parrot Co-ordinator, is up making
observations on feeding behaviour of the Swifties here on the Coast at present
and she reported that yesterday morning, 650 Swift Parrots were counted leaving
a communal roost at Charmhaven early in the morning, and going to feed in the
surrounding suburbs of Gorokan, Toukley, Lake Haven and Kanwal. Charmhaven is on
the western shore of Budgewoi Lake. Birds can still be seen feeing in Forest Red
Gum at the Fish Co-op at Gorokan in the vicinity of Main Rd & The Corso,
Gorokan.
Regent Honeyeaters still remain at South Morisset
and South Tacoma, but have deserted. Kariong in Brisbane Water NP and the
Galgaba Reserve, South Swansea. Finally there are still 5 Freckjled Ducks and 2
Pinkear at the Tuggerah STW.
