The following signs , observed over the last week or so, have variable
validity in signalling the actual [as opposed to calender] onset of spring ...
1. Latham's Snipe foraging along a shoreline
2. A Drongo flitting about
3. Striated Pardalotes start calling again
4. A male Paradise Riflebird flies noisily overhead at lunchtime
5. Fan-tailed Cuckoos start calling
6. A dozen Whimbrels roosting in a tree at high tide
7. Four Bush Turkeys holding an occult meeting at mid-morning
8. The Noisy Friarbirds displace the Noisy Miners from the Grevillias
9. The Bush Thickknees in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens have moved their
lunchtime loafing spots 15 cm west
10. The other birds in the Gardens are sunbathing in bikinis.
