Hello all and Tony P.,

Thank you Tony for your notes on this topic.
Unfortunately the 'Pro' range of cameras are simply things that I can only lust
after!

If anyone has any doubts about the potential of digital photography they need
only have a look at the examples on Tony's website:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/palliser/pelagic/volume1.html

There are numerous other sites on the web where unbelievable bird photos taken
with digital cameras can be found.

As Tony points out probably the biggest barrier to the universal acceptance of
digital in lieu of film is the initial cost.
But don't forget that asteroid that is heading our way; money won't be much use
after that hits!!
A digital camera would be ideal to get the pictures as there won't be anywhere
to get your film developed either.

Seriously, one thing to keep in mind is that if you are not already 'locked
into' a particular brand of 'high-end' SLR film camera there is a variety of
good quality 5 and 6 mega-pixel digital-SLRs on,or about to come on, the market.
Some of these are considerably cheaper than the Nikon DX1 that Tony uses.
Some may even produce images approaching the quality of the DX1.
Once over the initial shock of the purchase I am sure that most people will have
the same attitude as Tony.

One thing to note is that these 'professional' calse digital cameras may not be
available at your local camera shop; you will probably need to find a
'professional' camera dealer to actually see one.
But I expect that your local camera retailer should be able (reluctantly,
perhaps) to point you at such a place.
