I have just been given a reliable report of a large gull at Cooktown (North Queensland) - "at the waterfront where all the boats tie up at the lower end of the main street". Back and wings are mid grey rather than blackish. It is larger than the Silver Gulls which are present and has a black band in a short white tail. The bird was seen about 16 July. May be a Black-tailed Gull. If anyone is going through Cooktown in the near future, it would be worth checking it out.
