Further to recent reports of drought-driven birds, there have been a number
of Hardheads and Hoary-headed Grebes on Wentworth Falls Lake recently, a
little uncommon for that location. Good news from Wentworth Falls Lake is
that the local authorities (including representatives from Council, RSPCA,
NPWS, etc) have removed the many feral ducks and geese which were having an
impact on water quality. According to an article in the Blue Mountains
Gazette, they have been taken to an RSPCA approved farm. A small number of
these ferals seem to have eluded capture - let's hope they are eventually
taken away too. It will be interesting to see if there is now a
corresponding increase in native waterbird numbers at the lake.
I hope there are still some birds left in the drought-stricken interior -
the Outback Twitchathon will be running from this weekend and I wish all
the other teams good luck (but not TOO good!) and a great time. Looking
forward to the stories afterwards!
