Hi All,
Cairns Botanical Gardens/Centenary Lakes birdlist omits Mangrove
Gerygone, includes Large-billed and Brown Gerygones, both of which can be
found in mangroves. Pizzey and Knight's maps and text show Mangrove
Gerygone's East Coast distribution to be from Cardwell south, in others it
extends well north of Cairns.
We saw what appeared to be a Mangrove Gerygone in mangroves at
Centenary Lakes three weeks ago, grey above, paler below than Brown
Gerygone, no buffy flank colour, slim bill. Otherwise brown eye, white line
extending from base of bill over eye, white patch in tail like Brown and
Large Billed. Although active it was silent for the ten minutes we watched,
approachable to three metres, the same jizz as Mangrove Warblers in Gosford
and Broome.
Does anyone out there in the ether know the real truth about Mangrove
Warblers being in Cairns or otherwise?
