Birdline Victoria Update No. 85
For the week ending: 21 July, 2002

We've had heaps of new sightings this week covering the entire state.  We have also been getting the first avian signs of spring approaching, with reports of cuckoos calling, birds nesting and the return of spring favourites to our gardens.
 
Sightings

22 July

A Spotted Harrier was seen flying low over grassland and perching in dead trees at the Hamilton Parklands reserve on the northern edge of the city, thanks Steve Clark

 

21 July

A flock of 12 Blue-winged Parrots were seen feeding among the beaded glasswort patches on the edges of Swan Bay near Queenscliff, thanks Ron Corinaldi.

 

21 July

Two Red-capped Robins, an adult male and an immature male, were seen along the Djerriwarrh Track in the Long Forest Flora Reserve, thanks Isaac Clarey.

 

20 July

In a garden in Maffra, a party of seven Black-faced Cuckoo Shrikes, as well as a Restless Flycatcher and a Fan-tailed Cuckoo, thanks Duncan Fraser

 

19 July

Black Kites have been seen on the Western Highway, 4 km east of Stawell and 3 km east of Kaniva, thanks Ian May.

 

18 July

A Spotted Harrier was seen at the Western Treatment Plant, thanks Gil Langfield.

 

17 July

A single Cape Barren Goose observed with a large number of Australian White Ibis at 4pm on a small wetland on private land viewed from Coleman's Road, Lyndhurst, thanks Sally Koehler.

 

14 July

A Black Falcon was seen flying over the Spit Lagoons at the Werribee Sewage Farm, thanks Joy Tansey.

 

11 July

A Powerful Owl can be seen in the Botanic Gardens at the moment, on the right hand (eastern) side of the path just before the Perennial Border - enter via F Gate (Birdwood Ave) and follow the main path for c100m, thanks Hugo Phillips.

 

9 July

A Wedge-tailed Eagle was perched on a fence post, very near the Paradise Road Ponds at the Western Treatment Plant . (37 59 87 - 144 33 99), thanks Shirley Cameron .

 

9 July

There was a Pallid Cuckoo just out of Maffra, and a Fan-tailed was sitting on the fence at Duncan Fraser's Maffra home.

 

7 July

There were 80 Double-banded Plovers [about 30 going into or already in breeding plumage] at the Fitzroy River mouth, thanks Peter Lansley

An adult Kelp Gull and a Sanderling at mouth of Surry River, Narrawong, thanks Peter Lansley

 

7 July

6 Kelp Gulls at Discovery Bay opposite Bridgewater Lakes, thanks Peter Lansley

 

7 July

A White-bellied Sea-eagle was seen at Lake Hattah in the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and a pair of Mulga Parrots on the Lendrook Plain, thanks Isaac Clarey.


Updates

The Powerful Owl was not seen at the Botanical Gardens on the 14th, thanks Fiona Anderson

 

The Powerful Owl was at the same perch along the Yarra River in the Banyule Wetlands, sitting on what appeared to be a ringtail possum on the 9th, thanks Gary Wright

 

On the 24th of June the Azure Kingfisher was still at the confluence of Merri Ck and the Yarra right under the freeway bridges and 20 m downstream of the Alexandra Parade drain outfall, thanks Neville Pamment.
