Hi all,

Regarding my post about the light diesel, I didn't mean to imply it was harmless. I just wanted to point out that it was a hell of a lot less of a problem than heavy fuel oil which other posts had suggested was spilt,

JAG writes: Could you clarify please on a "hell of a lot less of a problem"? and how do you deem it to be less of a problem? are you making this statement, looking at it from the human angle or the wandering seabirds and sealife they get around "Wolf Rock" is there more to "Wolf Rock" then just seabirds? and what's above the surface?

Chris wrote: As it disperses and evaporates far more quickly, so it is a hazard to wildlife for less time.

JAG slurping coffee scribbled: Pardon???? could perhaps? there be more then just seabirds to be damaged by the light diesel fuel oil in this WORLD HERITAGE listed area? when crustaceans are killed it has a flowdown effect and nearly all forms of life that use the oceans for there food supply become affected.

Chris wrote: Once it disperses it is quickly consumed by naturally occurring bacteria.

JAG biting quickly a coffee scroll: Unfortunately Chris that is NOT totally true .... what happens to the naturally occuring bacteria?

Chris wrote: Heavy Fuel oil will coat every bird, rock, beach etc. that it touches with a thick sticky goo.

JAG typed with his nose: I was involved with a clean up in the UK, you may be too young to remember this? the vessel was called the Torrey Canyon .... myself and now I find many other UK army loon's, many on the Birding~Aus email list, know that the effects are still being felt by the Devon and Cornwall coastline and it's many residents, both human and otherwise.

Chris wrote: Wildlife would not like swimming through a slick of either product.

JAG using Eggy's beak: Why then defend either? which is what you seem to be doing? cheers egg.

Chris wrote: As far as the quantity spilled, my experience is that newspapers will just make up a number that looks good in their story.

JAG with moisture in eyes typed: Something like the first reports on how many people lost their lives on September the 11th., eh?

Chris wrote: The TV footage I saw didn't show much of a slick around the ship.

JAG begged: Please Chris, I am being serious here, look a lot harder then cos I sure as heck did, a light diesel slick could be seen stretching away from the 1980 rust bucket for quite some distance, light diesel is one particular fuel oil that is very hard to visually locate on the ocean surface, it needs a trained eye or specialised equipment to see it, much more difficult to visualise at sea then say bunker fuel or or crude oil.

Chris wrote: We wont know the extent of the disaster until someone knowledgeable goes and surveys the area for affected wildlife. I also find it bizarre and sickening that people would think something like this was exciting.

JAG loading a small forward gun on HMS Vanguard said: Dear Young Chris, It excites rage and anger in me like you would not believe BUT I have not once mentioned the word you yourself used about this extremely modern, well equipped pome rustbucket damaging the WORLD HERITAGE listed "Wolf Rock" makes you wonder about modern technology OR? who mans it? IT WAS NOT I THAT FIRST USED THE WORD EXCITING but I believe? in fact the rustbuckets captain?

JAG in a rush heading towards the local oil refinery ....
