Yesterday, Sunday 8 July, saw a Black Kite
at close range, perched and in flight, over land cleared for an industrial
development surrounding a small wetland in southern Coffs Harbour (mid-north
coast NSW), and close to normal Black Kite habitat — the tip. First time I’ve seen one in this
region and a further indication of the drift to the coast of inland species
discussed recently.
And, to pick up a thread that appeared on
Birding-Aus when I checked my mail this morning, a White-necked Heron flew over
our house in coastal Sawtell, which was my first record of the species in
Sawtell.
Lastly, on 21 May, a Grass Owl flew over our
house in Sawtell, just south of Coffs Harbour, in the late afternoon, being
mobbed or followed by large numbers of Little Corellas, lorikeets and a few
Torresian Crows, the latter harassing it constantly and striking at it as it
flew directly over the house and reasonably low. It was in view for many minutes, with
long trailing legs–feet readily visible.
(I’ll send details of the Kite and Owl
if you want them Alan.)
Cheers
Peter
