G'day,
A quick review of seabirds on Bribie Island
(approx. 70 km north of Brisbane) over the last couple of days, July
3 & July 4.
Shearwater numbers have been rising steadily, with
approximately 3000 Fluttering Shearwaters seen from the island today, off
Woorim. There were also at least 3 and probably 6 Hutton's Shearwaters
amongst them.
The highlight, though, has been an Antarctic Prion,
first seen by Duncan Walbridge yesterday afternoon close to the Surf Club, and
still present, albeit at some distance, this evening.
Australain Gannets have returned to the area with
about 15 seen, as well as 2 Brown Boobies.
The normal terns were in evidence (including a few
Little and Common) with single Lesser Crested and White-fronted. The
White-fronted Tern spent nearly an hour on the beach at Woorim in the company of
Crested Terns and Silver Gulls.
Note that these birds are not viewed passing a
headland but seem to like spending time in Moreton Bay between Bribie Island and
Moreton Island (something to do with the good tucker available at the
moment!)
For prospective visitors, the 'Now You've Found
It!' Coffee Shop at Woorim does pretty good pancakes.
