Well, the Outback Twitchathon is now only six weeks away. Something like
20 expressions of interest have been received by the Birds Australia
Sydney Office (who are coordinating this event nationally). It looks as
though we are going to have teams from most states birding in places like
the Canning Stock Route and the Nullarbor Plan.
As I have said in the past this is a way for birdos to celebrate 2002, The
Year of the Outback. All funds go to "Newhaven" for ongoing works that
will benefit both birds and birdos, a great outback cause.
People can really participate at two levels. The "serious" teams will be
out there trying to see as many species as possible while others can
simply do some casual birding, enjoying their time in the outback. I'd
particularly like to encourage those who live in what has been defined as
the "outback" for the purpose of this event to participate. If you don't
want to go flat out for 36 hours that's fine, why not just do a bit of
birding and see what you come up with. Get some friends and/or colleagues
to sponsor you and contribute that way.
If you haven't registered your team the deadline is 21 July. Simply
contact Frances Czwalinna on A reminder that this
Outback Twitchathon is a one-off event and is a 36
hour event, starting at 6.00AM on the first day and finishing at 6.00PM on
the second day. We encourage teams to participate on the weekend of 27-28
July but the 36 hour period can be any time during period 27 July to 18
August. The reason for this is to allow more people to participate as
well as allow a contingency plan in case a particular date is washed out.
If you can't get out there then consider sponsoring a team. My team,
including Carol Probets and Mick Todd - The Whacked-out Woodswallows, are
certainly open for business.
I think this event will be a great success. The drying out of the inland
will make it more interesting. A few birds might be harder to find but
I'm sure some teams will end up with some real goodies.
