Hi birders,
I received a call yesterday from Virginia Plowman of Woodgate, Qld (south
of Bundaberg) whose son saw two Swift Parrots at Woodgate a couple of days
ago. This is about 300 km north of Brisbane. Just when you thought
swifties had broken every record imaginable this season, they still pull
something special out of the bag!
It would be terrific to have this record verified by additional observers,
not that I don't believe Virginia or doubt her son's ability, but they were
her words. The two birds sighted might not necessarily be in the same spot
now, but Virginia reported an abundance of flowering Forest Red Gum, so
they could be anywhere and everywhere!
According to the records, Swift Parrots occur as far north as Bowen (a
further 700 km north of Woodgate) and this looks like a year that might
just see a repeat of this extraordinarily long distance northerly movement.
