Birdline Victoria Update No. 80
For
the week ending: 10 June 2002
OK, I know I said it was quiet last week (and the week
before I think as well), but this week Birdline Victoria has almost come to a
standstill! Only three sightings
for the week. This may mean that
everyone is indoors and avoiding the cold or that people are forgetting to
report what they see to Birdline, or perhaps it's a bit of both. After all if there is nothing to see,
why venture out? This time last
year Australasian Bitterns were being reported all over the place and the first
of the Gang Gang sightings were beginning to role in. I am looking forward to hearing about
everyone Queens Birthday long weekend
trips.
Sightings
2 June
A flock of about 40 Crested Pigeons were feeding on the
ground at Karkarook Park, Heatherton, thanks Tony Trood.
2 June
A Spotless Crake was seen at Albert Park on the outer edge
of the reed-beds at the north-western end of the Lake, roughly opposite the
swimming centre, thanks Hugo Phillips.
30 May
3 Brolgas were seen in a paddock near the Austen
Road Lagoons, looking towards Avalon Airport, in the Western Treatment Plant,
thanks David Stabb.
26 May
A morning trip to the You Yangs revealed among many
active birds 3 Diamond Firetails and 2 Painted
Button-Quail, thanks Paul Rose.
26 May
Highlights of an excursion to the Werribee Treatment
Plant were copious numbers of Freckled Duck, an Australasian
Bittern, and two White-bellied Sea Eagles (1 adult and 1
juvenile), thanks Debra Saxon Campbell.
25 May
Fifteen White-throated Needletails hawking
over Wesley College - Glen Waverley campus, thanks Paul Rose.
23 May
Four Brolgas feeding in a stubble field near Reedy
Lake Wildlife Reserve Moolap, thanks Ron Corinaldi.
19 May
Singing Honeyeaters and Spiny-cheeked
Honeyeaters have been seen since the 10th of April, near Sandringham Harbour
on the cliff above Sailboard HQ, thanks Michael Norris.
17 May
A flock of 9 Hooded Plovers including one juvenile
feeding at the eastern end of Lake Victoria near the Emily St entrance of Lake
Victoria, Point Lonsdale, thanks Ron Corinaldi.
14 May
Two Swift Parrots were sitting on a nearby tree on
the east side carpark of the Southland Shopping Centre, thanks Albert
Shirlton.
12 May
Chris Coleborn saw a Major Mitchell's Cockatoo on
the edge of Cohuna township with a flock of Galahs.
12 May
A single grey morph Eastern Reef Egret was seen at
Swan Bay (Queenscliff) next to where the train line intersects with Fellows Rd,
thanks Tim Dolby.
Updates
The Buff-banded Rail was in the small rush area just east
of the St. Kilda St. bridge over the Elster Creek/Elwood Canal (Melways 67 D4)
on the 20th of May, thanks Michael Norris
The Swift Parrots were again seen at Monash Uni on the
16th of May. Parking in
the area can be difficult and restrictions are enforced and the birds tend to
move on after 3pm, thanks Merrilyn Serong.
The single Regent Honeyeater was again seen on the
11th with six other species of honeyeater at Honeyeater (Cyanide) Dam
in Chiltern National Park, thanks Ian Temby.
