Day 1 , 28 May (400 km) covered areas in Balsfjord, Sagvatnet,
Kirkesdalen
and Rostadalen, i.e. all inland and southward from Tromsø, N.Norway.
Day 2, 29 May (200 km) covered areas on Tromsøya, Rakfjorden, Sommarøy
and
Tisnes, i.e. all on my home island and on Kvaløya, the large island west of
Tromsøya, between us and the open sea. Sommarøy is on the open coast. The
weather both days was fantastic, 20*C, sun from a cloudless sky and little
wind.
I usually do not give lists of birds seen, but this may give a good
impression of our more common birds this time a year. You always miss a few
obvious birds, such as e.g. the Shelduck this time. In the inland I used no
time in the woods there, and thus missed many common inland forest birds,
such as Siskin, Coal Tit, Crossbill, Tree Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, etc etc.
Going up in the hills would have added Ptarmigan, Snow Bunting, Dotterel,
and probably Twite, and the outer islands have Kittiwakes and various auks.
The asterisked birds were year birds this weekend. (The Arctic Terns
escaped this fate , because I saw them in the Weddell Sea in March!!)
