Hi everyone
Joy Tansey treated me to another fantastic day at Werribee bird haven and was
again a great guide for the day.
Highlights of the day included:
** Brown Falcon - 1x1 perched with blue band on left leg at 37° 58.539' S 143°
37.195' E (37° 58' 32" S, 144° 37' 12" E)
** Brown Falcon - playing "black-shouldered kite" whilst hovering with legs
hanging
** Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters giving their gurgling bubbling call
** Purple-crowned Lorikeet foraging by licking at the green centre of eucalypt
flowers
** Loads of Australian Spotted Crake (but alas, no other crakes which still
present a gap in my field guide)
** Red-kneed Dotterel - various here and there, and 32 in one place. A great
sight to see so many of these together
** Fan-tailed Cuckoos which appeared to be very curious as they came close to
us
** Horsfields Bronze-Cuckoos
** Whistling Kite - 2 sat in a tree, with one having the tips of its wings
crossed, while the other had the black tips of
its wings meeting together neatly, about 3 cm short of the end of its brown tail
** Flame Robin female
** White-bellied Sea-eagle - 1 flying over the bay
** Red-necked Avocet - 1 with a metal band right leg; another 2 with metal
band and orange flag left leg
In general, many birds were in glorious and pristine plumage. Presumably they
have moulted for winter and are ready for
breeding. The royal blue/purple on the Purple Swamphens was a knockout, and
tiny male Superb Fairy-wrens were visible from a
long way away simply because of their vivid rich blue colour. Red-necked
Avocets had that gorgeous brown colour on their
heads
Does anyone know please whether the Bird and Bat Banding Scheme has set up an
email address so that band sightings can be
forwarded to them via email?
