Dear All

Birds first: on 3rd May I and others saw a Banded Lapwing at
Quiet Corner, towards the northern end of the proposed
marine sanctuary. It was there at 1415 and still there at
1545. Perhaps it was trying to encourage everyone to find
sensible boundaries for the sanctuary. I think they have.

This Wednesday evening a map of the proposed sanctuary
appeared on a Victorian state government website:
http://www.nre.vic.gov.au

It has some changes from the final recommendations by the
Environment Conservation Council but these losses from the
area seem to me to be OK in view of the issues.

To find it from the home page you have to go to coasts and
marine, then marine, then marine national parks, then
proposed marine sanctuaries, and click on the .pdf file.
DO NOT be distracted by other likely-looking routes through
the web site.

The bill is due to be introduced to the Victorian parliament
tomorrow (Thursday).

Fingers crossed. And all the best to our cousins in
California where the Friends of the Edward F Ricketts
underwater park are trying to get "no take" status right
now. http://www.rickettsreserve.org/ricketts/

Just knowing that the Ricketts name is shared across the
Pacific gives me a feeling of hope. And their slogan "where
all marine life is protected and where access remains
unlimited" is one I think most people here share. That
sentence gives priority to protection of marine life over
access !
