Dear All,
A wide group of conservation organisations are organizing a "Rally For Our
Forests" to be held in Batman Park (cnr Flinders and Spencers streets),
Melbourne at 11 am on Saturday May 18th.
The aim of this rally is to demonstrate support for an end to logging in
old growth forests across Victoria and to show support for the creation of
a series of conservation areas (National and State Parks) in the
Box-Ironbark Forests of central Victoria. Central Victoria, and
Box-Ironbark Forests/Woodlands in particular, are currently very poorly
represented in our conservation system. The ECC have recently finished
their investigation into this area of Victoria and recommended the creation
of a number of parks. This recommendation was based to a large extent on
the overwhelming evidence that the unique fauna of this ecosystem is
currently in decline, with numerous local extinctions already being
reported. The woodland bird communities in particular are showing both a
decrease in numbers, diversity and range.
I would encourage all birders to attend this Rally and support conservation
of our unique ecosystems and avifauna.
